“We paid a large sum of money for our 4 night 3 day holiday and sadly the service we received from Sykes Cottages and Dream Cottages did not reflect the amount of money paid or the level of customer service expected.”

We have a number of complaints to register: 1. On entering the cottage we were hit by an overwhelming stench of dog. This heavy, dense stench permeated throughout the cottage but mainly downstairs. We have hired holiday houses many times that advertised that dogs could stay but we have never experienced such an unpleasant dog smell before in a property. 2. On unpacking our food we discovered that the fridge had been turned off and the internal light did not work. We have no idea why the cleaners turned the fridge off and why they did not realise that the fridge was turned off when they put the welcome pint of milk into the fridge. Dave, the property manager, brought a temporary fridge over to store our food whilst we waited to see if the original fridge would work. On our departure day we received a phone call from 01305 789000 with a message from a woman who did not leave her name asking us how we wanted our tabletop fridge returned to us. The woman did not leave her name or the company name. We wonder if your staff communicate to each other. 3. On using the cottage china and cooking utensils we encountered a large number of plates, bowls, cutlery, glasses, mugs and saucepans that were absolutely filthy. They were covered in encrusted food matter. They were unusable. We rang Sykes and spoke with Anna about the cleaning situation and agreed that the cleaners would return the following day between 11am/4pm to clean these utensils. The keys were left for them in the key safe. At no time did Anna give us an apology. The cleaners never appeared. We have photos of some of the filthy items. 4. On making our booking with Sykes I saw there were pictures of a log burner in the cottage and I asked the agent if logs were provided and she told me that I had to bring my own. I bought several bags of logs and fire lighters etc to use and on arrival discovered that the wood burner is in fact a gas fire. I was given incorrect advice which left me out of pocket. The Sykes employee did not check the details of the property. 5. There were no instructions on how to use the cooker or microwave. The cottage file stated " Full instruction manuals can be found in the cabinet under the TV, located in the sitting room". This was not the case, there were no instructions provided. 6. We found various items left behind down the sides of the chairs and the sofa eg. comb and wrappers. We loved the cottage but feel sorry for the owners who have a great cottage but are let down by the booking company Sykes and the cleaning company Dreams.

About the location

UPWEY

Dorchester 4.5 miles; Weymouth 4 miles.

The picturesque village of Upwey lies just four miles north of Weymouth, nestling beneath the Dorset Ridgeway, and takes its name from the shallow chalk stream, the River Wey, which bubbles up here from an underground spring. Upwey is well-known for its Wishing Well, where George III once sought the benefits of the natural spring water. It is now a delightful tea room, serving lunches and traditional cream teas. There are a number of footpaths leading directly from the village to miles of unspoilt countryside, and close by is the market town of Dorchester, Thomas Hardy’s ’Casterbridge’. An easy drive or bus ride takes you to the popular seaside resort of Weymouth offering visitors glorious golden sandy beaches, excellent watersports facilities and a bustling harbour. An attractive village location and an ideal place to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
