About Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens

Settled in ancient woodland, Abbotsbury Gardens is an idyllic place to reconnect with nature. Meander around Victorian, walled gardens, where you can spot rare and beautiful plants.

Discover a selection of Magnolias, Camellia Groves, Rhododendron and Hydrangea on your stroll. With over 6,000 plants on display you can get trigger-happy with your camera! If any plants stand out to you, be sure to pop into the Plant Centre.

Explore the Woodland Sculpture Trail and revisit your childhood as you spot Alice, the White Rabbit and Cheshire Cat! After your adventure, unwind in the coffee shop to sip a hot beverage and why not treat yourself to a sweet treat?

History of Abbotsbury Gardens

As well as an impressive scenery, Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens is steeped in history. The Grade I listed gardens links to the forming of the monarchy, which once ruled the village.

However, in 1514, Sir Giles Strangways converted the building into a magnificent mansion. The wonderful Abbotsbury Gardens became established in 1765, and since then developed.

Although sheltered by the luscious valley, the gardens lead down to the Chesil Beach. This microclimate is what flourishes the diverse plants at Abbotsbury.

Now, the unique climate of Abbotsbury tropical gardens belongs to Mrs Charlotte Townshend.

As part of the Ilchester Estate, Mrs Townhend owns 15,000 acres in and around Abbotsbury. Covering both Abbotsbury and Chesil Beach, Mrs Townhead possesses a great stretch of land.

The village of Abbotsbury offers a fun-filled day for the whole family. From its wonderful wildlife to splendid scenery, there is something for everyone.

Venture into the heart of a colony at Abbotsbury Swannery, home to Mute swans. Here you can enjoy a tranquil walk and hand feed the graceful birds.

Soak up the Dorset scenery and head down to Chesil Beach. This stunning beach barrier stretches for 18 miles; here you can see iconic Dorset landmarks like Durdle Door. You can also wander along the South West Coast path for a hike with a view.

The 18th century gardens are open 10-4pm on a weekday and 10-2pm on a Saturday. The quaint gift shop has the same opening times, so you will get chance to browse whilst here.

Final admissions for the Abbotsbury tropical gardens are between 2-3pm, so be sure to plan your journey in advance.
