Cerne Abbas

Tucked away in the beautiful Dorset Downs, this charming village is home to the world renowned ‘rude giant’.  This 180 ft high chalk figure is full of legend; speculation continues as to his meaning, ranging from a Roman depiction of Hercules, a pagan fertility figure or a caricature of a historical person. You can walk ‘giants hill’ and see the giant form a new perspective as well as enjoy views of the surrounding Cerne Valley.

The village grew around the large Benedictine Abbey which was founded in 987AD, its remains are still in the grounds. The abbey was a prosperous one, with a tradition of brewing. This tradition is still going strong, with Cerne Abbas Brewery brewing up ales using locally grown barley.

Surrounded by an area of outstanding natural beauty, the village is the perfect location for walkers. With many trails to choose from you will soon find yourself enjoying breath taking views.

As a quintessential Dorset village, Cerne Abbas is chocolate box pretty with a mix of architecture, a babbling brook and slower pace of life. Boasting several eateries, including the New Inn, an award winning 16th century pub, as well as a tearoom serving Dorset cream teas and a great local shop, and Cerne Abbas is the perfect base to wind down and relax on your stay.

Less than 10 miles from the County town of Dorchester, and roughly 30 minutes from the Jurassic Coast, Cerne Abbas is a quaint village with a lot to offer.
