“Positives first: the location was really good.”

A very short walk down a (steep) hill from the property found us at the harbour with plenty of pubs, cafes and eateries. Approx a 10-15 minute walk to the beach and into the town was perfect for our 4 teenagers who could enjoy a bit of freedom from following us around! We had 2 cars and were able to park outside the property most days and on the others, parked only a couple of mins walk away. We did not need to pay. Further, it's ideally located to explore the local area by car too. The house had plenty of room for us all, we found the beds very comfortable, the shower was excellent and the second toilet outside was really useful. The fridge freezer was large and we used the dining room daily. Now the bad points: the property is in desperate need of TLC. On arrival there was a large slimy green puddle directly outside the front door. This is obviously a known issue as a brush was left to sweep the water away each morning. There was only a small doormat so wet footprints made there way all down the hall - perhaps a longer runner could be provided if the puddle issue is not fixable. The living room as we entered had holes in the walls. The downstairs is in need of repainting, particularly the hall which is scuffed. We found it very bare and bland. There were no lamps which together with the white walls and off white laminate flooring felt unwelcoming especially in the evenings as the overhead lights were so bright. We used the living area only once - the rest of the time we went out or used the bedrooms to relax. Lamps, soft furnishings and a bit of colour would change the feel dramatically. All of the blinds are discoloured and could do with replacing. The kitchen had absolutely nowhere to store food. As a self-catering holiday let, there should really be provision for storage of bread/tins/veg etc. Cleanliness was hit and miss. The rooms seemed clean but when we pulled a sofa out to retrieve something dropped behind it it was dirty. It seems hoovering/mopping was fairly cursory. Upstairs, the "pink" bedroom had a hole in the window frame/sill. The bathroom ceiling above the shower had some mold spots. On the second floor, the wardrobe space is quite limited, a re-working of the space could help with this. A small dressing table would be helpful too. The courtyard is unwelcoming. The table provided is flimsy and bent when leant on so we did not use it other than to dry beach towels. Some plants/flowers/greenery would make a real difference. Half of the courtyard was taken up by a canoe. Overall, I'd rate the property 6.5 out of 10. The bad points did not spoil our holiday as the weather was so good we only really used the house for our evening meal and for sleeping. Had the weather been bad and we'd been confined indoors more often, this may have been different. I'd recommend spending a bit of time and money on sprucing the place up as this has potential to be a little gem as its location is really good. One final point, I would not recommend this property for elderly or disabled persons as the stairs to the first floor are steep, winding and narrow.
