“Magnolia Cottage really is a 'proper cottage'; latch doors, creaky floorboards, the works.”

We were surprised how warm it was, expecting it to be a bit draughty, we arrived with throws for the evening, but we didn't need them (and throws were also provided!). The cottage was very clean and provided most of the things we needed. The sloping ceilings were an issue and all three of us were caught out. The twin room was better as you could access the middle of the room with a normal height ceiling, but the main bedroom was more problematic, as whichever side you slept on, when you got ...

The cottage was very clean and provided most of the things we needed. The sloping ceilings were an issue and all three of us were caught out. The twin room was better as you could access the middle of the room with a normal height ceiling, but the main bedroom was more problematic, as whichever side you slept on, when you got out of bed and stood up .. whack, there's the ceiling! However, it happened less as the week went on and we became accustomed to it. We are quite a tall family, between 5'8 and 6'2. The kitchen was well-equipped, but there was a niggle ... the kettle badly needed descaling. Take your own tin opener! The lounge was a good size, but the sofas were low and quite hard, which made them uncomfortable and getting up, particularly for my dad, was a bit challenging. Parking was easy, but the property is on a main road, so take care pulling out. The cottage is close to Weymouth, Dorchester and Bovington. A fantastic little farm shop is literally a couple of hundred yards away, selling delicious treats and decent coffee. We had a lovely time; like i said, this is a 'proper cottage', but i don't think our heads would cope with a second visit.

The property

Pretty and furnished to a high standard, this thatched cottage sits tucked away in the quintessential village of Osmington in Dorset.

The bright and clean decor gives the cottage a cosy feel, with quirky, individual touches around the property.

The open plan living area with kitchen, dining table for four and sitting area lends itself perfectly to socialising and relaxing during your stay.

Two comfortable bedrooms will give you a good nights’ sleep and if you have kids, a cot and high chair are available too. Leave your car behind and explore the area on foot – sink in the gorgeous views of Dorset countryside and coast. Around a 20-minute walk along the famous South West Coast Path leads you to Osmington Mills, the beautiful coastal hamlet, known for its colourful history of smugglers, who supposedly took refuge in the local inn (now The Smugglers Inn), which dates back to the XIII century.

The inn is large with plenty of outdoor seating, and the food is superb!

Try a meal there and explore the beach nearby. Situated next to Craig's Farm Dairy, tea room and farm shop, you will find yourself perfectly placed for buying fresh milk, cheeses and wonderful ice cream.

A short drive away is the bustling seaside town of Weymouth, with a wealth of bars, restaurants, shops and activities, as well as the three mile stretch of idyllic sandy beach, hosting a range of traditional seaside entertainment during the summer months and great for wintry strolls out of peak season.

During your stay we would also recommend a trip East to the unique Lulworth Cove; spend the day on the sheltered shingle beach or enjoy a meal at one of the local pubs or restaurants, while taking in the stunning scenery.

A walk from Lulworth Cove over to Durdle Door offers the perfect opportunity to admire the striking views over the coastline and unusual geological formations. Venture West and you will reach the beautiful market town of Bridport with its' lovely shops and weekly market with fresh local produce.

Take a trip to beautiful West Bay harbour with its' lovely beach and amazing cliffs to admire.

Venture further and you will find yourself on the fossil hunters land – Charmouth and Lyme Regis.

This charming and compact cottage is a perfect family holiday base to explore Dorset coast and countryside.

About the location

OSMINGTON

Osmington village, sits on the Jurassic coastline of Dorset, just 6 miles from Weymouth with it’s infamous beach and historic harbour and just 11 miles from Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. Home to the famous Chalk hillside carving of George III on horseback, cut into the hillside to commemorate the Royal visits to Weymouth, this landmark can be seen from miles away. It is also the place that John Constable spent his honeymoon in 1816 and where he completed his painting of Weymouth Bay that now hangs in the National Gallery. The South West Coastal path runs through Osmington Mills, a tiny hamlet on the edge of Osmington. Here many walkers start their coast path walks at the Smugglers inn, where reputedly there are historic connections to smuggling. Be sure to visit to find out all the stories. A short drive will see you reach a local convenience store at Preston. Weymouth offers a larger variety of shopping, eating and entertainment choices.
