    If it was for a one or two night stay, things may have been seen in a different light, however, we had booked Millmead Annex for 28 days, having said that, the length of stay should have been much more comfortable than it was. In addition and adding context, our stay did coincide with a continuous heat wave. Firstly, location! Perfect for our needs and especially the short walk to the cafe and pub.     If it was for a one or two night stay, things may have been seen in a different light, however, we had booked Millmead Annex for 28 days, having said that, the length of stay should have been much more comfortable than it was. In addition and adding context, our stay did coincide with a continuous heat wave. Firstly, location! Perfect for our needs and especially the short walk to the cafe and pub. However, Millmead sits at the edge of the village on a track leading to the equipment supply depot for all the local farm tractors and machinery which ran 24/7 it being summer and harvesting season. (worth checking before booking). Although a fan was supplied for the bedroom, the lack of any air conditioning meant having the windows open on the hot sleepless nights made worse by the harvesting traffic. The shower never actually ever worked properly and disappointingly we were unable to sit in the garden as it was extremely overgrown and not representative of the advertising photos. The fact one had to ‘limbo’ around the bottom of the bed due to the adjacent sloping roof, which in reality is much more severe than perceived in the photos. There were simple things absent, like any salt or pepper, although, it has to be said the owner was receptive to our request for the shower taps to be repaired and the boiler re-started. The accommodation came supplied with a broom only and when we requested a vacuum one was promptly supplied, but such a shame we had to ask for such basics. Millmead has very poor internet reception and no free to air tv (extremely frustrating if you were hoping to watch the free to view fifa world cup !!). Also when the main house is occupied it can have three cars making parking a little bit of a juggling act. This may all seem small points exacerbated by seasonal factors but aggregated become contentious issues which go towards the overall poor experience.

Portesham is a beautiful West Dorset village, superbly located for access to the spectacular World Heritage Jurassic Coast, South West Coastal Path and South Dorset Ridgeway, in an area of outstanding natural beauty and only a short drive from Weymouth, Dorchester or Bridport. The village is surrounded by glorious countryside, with direct access to public footpaths including the south west coastal path. There is an excellent local pub serving good food and real ales, and a village farm store. A great base for touring, there is plenty to see and do within a short drive of this picturesque area, including Abbotsbury Swannery and Tropical Gardens. Take a walk up to St Catherine’s Chapel and experience the fantastic views over Chesil beach. The bustling market town of Dorchester is just 8 miles away, with its array of interesting shops, restaurants and museums.
