The property

Rope Cottage is an exquisitely restored Grade II listed former rope maker’s home, discreetly positioned in the heart of Bridport, Dorset.

Brimming with heritage, this charming retreat is perfect for couples and keen walkers eager to uncover the Jurassic Coast while enjoying an authentic setting.

Step inside and you’ll immediately sense its character, with the living area centred around a woodburning stove, creating a welcoming spot to unwind after coastal adventures.

Stained glass doors cast colourful light across the room, adding to the cottage’s historic charm, while a dining table offers space for relaxed meals and planning tomorrow’s explorations.

The kitchen, though compact, is thoughtfully equipped and complemented by a handy cloakroom, making clever use of the traditional layout.

Arranged over three floors, the accommodation reflects the property’s age and style.

On the first floor, a twin bedroom sits beside a generous shower room featuring a walk-in shower, ideal after long walks or beach days.

Above, the loft-level main bedroom nestles beneath the eaves, complete with a king-size bed and skylight window for a tranquil hideaway under Dorset skies.

Outside, a shared courtyard echoes the site’s rope-making history, providing a peaceful space to enjoy for all.

From this central location, Bridport’s independent shops, galleries, and cafés are all within easy reach, alongside a vibrant food scene ranging from street eats to seasonal menus.

The bustling market and artisan quarter, the Electric Palace with its lively programme, and Palmers Brewery tours add to the town’s appeal.

For walkers, Colmer’s Hill promises panoramic countryside views, while West Bay, just 1.5 miles away, offers a picturesque harbour and dramatic cliffs.

Seafood enthusiasts can venture to Hive Beach Café for locally landed dishes with sweeping sea vistas.

Rope Cottage is a distinctive base for those seeking history, convenience, and the beauty of Dorset’s coast.

About the location

BRIDPORT

Lyme Regis 10 miles; West Bay 2 miles.

The attractive market town of Bridport grew up around the River Brit, and was shaped by its extensive history of rope and net making. The long, wide streets and alleyways between the houses were once where the flax strands were twisted into rope, while today those streets are filled with an interesting variety of shops, restaurants and inns. Bridport’s market is regularly featured on the River Cottage TV programme. 2 miles south of Bridport is the dramatic Jurassic coast at West Bay, now a World Heritage Site, home to the backdrop for TV's Harbour Lights and the coastal setting for popular Broadchurch, whilst the picturesque resort of Lyme Regis is within 10 miles. A superb base for exploring wonderful West Dorset.

Note: The age of the property does mean the stairs are steeper and narrower than modern homes, and they may not be suitable for the elderly, infirm or young children - please bear in mind when booking.
Note: Non-enclosed, shared courtyard garden.
