There’s something undeniably magical about Dorset. With its rolling countryside, honey-coloured cottages, winding lanes and Jurassic Coast vistas, it’s a rare place where time seems to slow down.

At Dream Cottages, we’re lucky enough to welcome guests from around the world who fall in love with this timeless county. Whether you’re drawn by history, nature, coastlines, or simply a quiet escape, Dorset’s villages and towns offer something truly special.

To help you plan your perfect getaway, here are some of our favourite pretty spots to explore—each one with its own unique charm and character.

1. Corfe Castle

Corfe Castle

If fairy tales were real, they would look like Corfe Castle. Nestled in the Isle of Purbeck, this ancient stone village is dominated by a dramatic 11th-century castle, built by William the Conqueror and steeped in Medieval intrigue. The cobbled streets are lined with traditional Purbeck stone cottages, boutique shops, and tearooms pouring steaming cups of locally sourced tea.

Don’t miss: Climbing to the castle ruins for panoramic views across the Purbeck Hills. Stay until sunset—when the castle silhouette against dusky skies is a photographer’s dream.

2. Lyme Regis

With its pastel-coloured homes cascading toward the shore, Lyme Regis feels like stepping straight into a Victorian seaside painting. Located along the Jurassic Coast, it’s a favourite for fossil hunters, artists and holidaying families. Spend your day strolling the historic Cobb harbour wall, paddling in the waves, and exploring the independent art galleries. It affectionately takes the name, “the pearl of Dorset.”

Best for: Romantic walks along the seafront, seafood dining, and coastal adventures. For families, fossil hunting tours are a fantastic way to learn about the area’s prehistoric past.

3. Sherborne

Sherborne exudes elegance. Boasting not one, but two castles—Old Sherborne Castle ruins and the stately Sherborne Castle & Gardens—it’s rich in both natural beauty and architectural splendour. The town centre is a delight, with medieval buildings housing antique shops and delicatessens offering local cheeses and treats.

Perfect for: Slow exploration, café hopping, and visiting Sherborne Abbey, one of the finest examples of Perpendicular Gothic architecture in England.

4. Abbotsbury

Full of charm and surrounded by rolling hills, Abbotsbury is a postcard-worthy haven. Its thatched cottages tumble down lanes towards the world-famous Swannery, the only place in the world where you can walk through a colony of nesting mute swans. The village’s Subtropical Gardens are a lush paradise, filled with exotic plants and winding trails.

Must-do: Climb up to St. Catherine’s Chapel for sweeping views over Chesil Beach and the Fleet Lagoon.

5. West Bay

West Bay Beach

If you’ve seen Broadchurch, you’ve seen West Bay. Its towering golden cliffs are among Dorset’s most recognisable landmarks. The working harbour buzzes with local fishing boats, and the quay is dotted with kiosks serving some of the freshest fish and chips you’ll ever try.

Top tip: Enjoy a coastal stroll along the South West Coast Path or relax with a classic seaside cone while watching the waves roll in.

6. Gold Hill, Shaftesbury

Gold Hill;

On Dorset’s northern edge lies Gold Hill, one of the country’s most photographed streets. With its steep cobbled slope, thatched cottages and panoramic views of the Blackmore Vale, it feels frozen in time. Visitors will recognise it from the iconic 1970s Hovis bread advert.

Photo spot: About halfway up the hill—perfect for capturing the ultimate Dorset shot.

7. Cerne Abbas

cerne abbas dog walk

Famous for the ancient Cerne Abbas Giant, this pretty village is a favourite among walkers, history lovers and those seeking tranquillity. Here you’ll find narrow lanes, traditional pubs with roaring fires, and babbling brooks flowing gently past rose-clad cottages.

Great for: Scenic walks, a pub lunch, and exploring historic sites such as the Cerne Abbey ruins.

8. Wareham

Illuminate at The Blue Pool, Dorset

Tucked beside the River Frome, Wareham is one of Dorset’s oldest settlements. It’s a peaceful place to slow down and enjoy nature. Take a leisurely boat or kayak trip along the river or wander through the Saturday street market where local produce and crafts fill the stalls.

For something special: Book a river cruise at sunset for tranquil views and wildlife spotting.

9. Beaminster

Mapperton House

Often overlooked in favour of larger towns, Beaminster is full of hidden charm. With elegant Georgian architecture, award-winning eateries and beautiful countryside surrounding it, this small town is ideal for a relaxed escape. Mapperton House and Gardens is a must visit attraction!

Ideal for: Food lovers and countryside walks. Try lunch at a local gastro pub followed by exploring nearby walking trails.
