“Lovely cottage.”

Their was a lot of dark brown hair spread all over the bathroom wall in the bath area.. Lots of cob webs in the corners of the property. Apart from that it felt clean and was perfect for what we required. I renewed the battery in the clock because I found it annoying being there displaying the wrong time. The walk up and down the hill between the car parking space and the front door with children and luggage is a bit annoying. Would be great if you could park closer. The space ...

The space you can park is very tight and the doors get struck against the wall. The bathroom fan is extremely noisy when using the loo in the middle of the night. Beds were fine Sofa was fine Cooking area and dinning area perfect Lots of utensils available Views were lovely The outside seating area is not as good as I expected. The pictures on the advert are of two completely separate times. The area now has a fence and is overgrown so the view is very restricted. No complaints just little things that could make the cottage really really good. There is a kind request that guest are to keep the noise down when returning late at night.. although one night we were kept awake from noise from the main houses garden ( no, not when the euros was on) It’s all minimal things that quite honestly did not affect our stay that much. Just a heads up for the owners to make it perfect. If the outside seating was made better in some way then I’d happily return and enjoy that space more with a morning or evening coffee.

“The property itself is lovely.”

Just a few things that could be better are the beds have a very thin mattress which we didn’t find comfortable.There’s not enough storage like draws in both bedrooms which even for one week with only two of us wasn’t great. The bathroom has no window so by the time you’ve had a shower you feel like you’ve been in a steam room aswell.Very noisy fan in there that’s useless.

“This is one of the nicest cottages we have stayed in, clean, tidy and very well looked after with stunning views, also location is great in between Weymouth and Portland for travel either way along the coast or just into town with a choice of supermarkets close by for shopping, the seating area is very private and it gets the sun most of the day, it was very relaxing on an evening watching the wildlife, would definitely stay here again.”

“In general we had a pleasant stay.”

We liked the spacious living room and open kitchen, the great view over Weymouth and to the coast. The double bed was a bit narrow, but we slept well. We didn't like the very small bathroom with the very small washbasin. Unfortunately there was no shelf or other space in the bathroom to place the bath utensils. Therefore you have to improvise a bit. The cottage is o.k. for two. With more people it could be difficult to store clothes and luggage. Maintanace could be a bit better: defect light bulbs in corridor and hub over the stove, discharged battery in the nice clock and the electric kettel seemed to be not descaled for long time. Cleaniness was very good for the whole cottage, except for the sink which was not polished at all. Merkham Cottage is an ideal point to discover (the south of) Dorset. There are a lot of attractions nearby. But we would not choose again.

“The accommodation was perfectly located within a short drive to beautiful places.”

Everything we could need was provided in the cottage from a coffee and teapot, through to full size fridge freezer and entertainment. Hosts were very helpful and contactable. The only negative comment I have is that the double bed in the main bedroom is broken. It is propped up with a book and the mattress is far too thin for the base it is on. We both ended up sleeping in the single bed for a break as we were suffering from sore hips from the bed. I have fed this back to the owner. I questioned Sykes staff about the bed situation after reading and earlier review. I was told the bed had been sorted so travelled happily. This was not the case. It didn't spoil our holiday too much though.

“The cottage is of a high standard and in a great location.”

It is very private and quiet, and only a 5 minute drive from the beach. The only issue we had was with the bed in the main bedroom. The mattress was foam and only a few inches thick, on a divan base (with a missing castor propped up with a book). We could feel the base through the mattress which resulted in a week of poor sleep. Some people can sleep anywhere, but this is one of the most important things when staying away from home in my opinion. Overall, this is a great base from which to explore Dorset.

“Nice accommodation.”

Great touring location. Weymouth makes a great base with lots of places to visit nearby, close to Chesil Beach which was really interesting. One bit of feedback (not a major issue for us) is it would be nicer if the patio was paved and the furniture covered to keep it clean. So we could have sat out on it.

Very quiet, cottage located in the countryside, away from main road down a short drive. Cottage well laid out with large combined kitchen, diner, lounge. Bathroom small, however ok. Good base to explore the coastal areas of Dorset. Lots to things to see and do in the area, public transport limited, car is very useful.

“The cottage is clean and has pretty much everything you need, although a mirror near a decent light source and plug socket for a hairdryer would be helpful.”

It is definitely NOT accessible, the slope down the drive is short but steep and there are steps up to the cottage and two steps inside. It is a quiet area with pretty good views. We did get a surprise when someone climbed over the fence right outside the patio doors, it turned out to be the owner who then came back and banged on the doors to apologise when he saw our car and realised we were in! I did have a problem with the parking, there is a small parking space allotted to the cottage - fine if you don't need to open the doors wide. In the listing you are asked to park considerately because the drive is shared with the owner who lives next door. Unfortunately the owner and his family had between 3 and 4 cars parked without much thought for us to get our car in and out. There is an area with a very low wall in the drive, very hard to see in poor light, hence a scratch on my front bumper from trying to get out of the drive.

A great base from which to explore Dorset and we would not hesitate to recommend it. The service from Sykes (who we'd never used before) was very professional and efficient - easy to do things online but equally helpful when speaking to a real person on the phone. Will use them again.

“Lovely cottage and good position.”

We had a great week travelling around the area and this was a good base. Just a little disappointed that the cushions on the dining chairs were pretty dirty and considering this was near the start of the season assume they hadn’t been cleaned from last year. Everything else was very good though.

“The place was great in its comfort and general outlook.”

What let it down was the failure to mention the gradient of the slope to get to it. Although the picture shows 'a' gradient, it could be easily confused, as we were, into an expectation that it was a road going past. The car has to be parked at the top of this gradient as the front door is at the bottom of it. We feel that the description should include, very very clearly, that not only wheelchairs would have a problem (and there are steps to get to front door as well so not disabled friendly) but anyone with a slight mobility problem (you may sense that I have this!) so in my case I had to descend the slope in a sideways motion very very slowly. This interior was great and our short chats with the owner next door (we had a problem with the front door) were very pleasant.

Markham Cottage sits in an enviable position with uninterrupted views over to Chesil Beach and Weymouth Bay, next door to the owner’s property.

This lovingly renovated cottage is all on one level with a couple of steps to the front door and a couple of steps in the bedroom/bathroom area.

The open plan living kitchen dining area, is a spacious and yet cosy space, inviting you to curl up with a good book and relax, glass of wine in hand.

The perfectly positioned terrace means you can sit back and enjoy the vista whilst enjoying the peace and tranquillity of the surrounding countryside. You are only a few minutes' drive from the heart of Weymouth, and its golden sandy beach with all the restaurants, shops and amenities you may desire.

There are walks along the esplanade, fish and chips to be eaten on the harbour side and local ice creams to be sampled.

Markham Cottage is ideally positioned between Weymouth and Wyke Regis, providing easy access to Chesil Beach, Portland, the National Sailing Academy, Weymouth and surrounding Dorset attractions such as West Bay, Abbotsbury, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, all within an easy 30 minute drive and offering spectacular scenery along the way.

About the location

WYKE REGIS

Weymouth 2 miles; Dorchester 9 miles.

Wyke Regis is a village on the south western side of Weymouth that sits on the northern edges of Portland Harbour and reaches as far as the back of Chesil beach and The Fleet, just two miles from the centre of Weymouth. There are local shops, cafés and restaurants including the famous Crab House café, with it’s own oyster beds on the doorstep. The National Sailing School, an Olympic legacy, offers a wide variety of water sports and is just two miles away on the edge of Portland Harbour. The Fleet Lagoon that runs between Wyke Regis and Chesil beach is an important area for wildlife and there are many species of birds to be seen in the area, whilst Chesil beach is also a renowned spot for fishing. The Fleet is probably most famous for being the testing ground for Barnes Wallis’s bouncing bomb, immortalised in the film the Dam Busters. Wyke Regis is the perfect location from which to explore many of Dorset’s most iconic locations on the Jurassic Coast.

Note: Access to Markham Cottage is via a slope which can be driven down, or you may choose to walk. The neighbouring field next to the front terrace is at a lower ground level, the terrace has a small surrounding wall.
