“Simply Perfect – A Charming Cottage in Burton Bradstock Dormouse Cottage is simply perfect!”

An amazing, charming cottage set in the beautiful village of Burton Bradstock. From the moment we arrived, we felt so welcomed. An amazing, charming cottage set in the beautiful village of Burton Bradstock. From the moment we arrived, we felt so welcomed. The owner was incredibly attentive and checked in with us on the day of our arrival, which was such a lovely touch. The cottage has absolutely everything you could need for a relaxing stay. Yes, it is situated on the main road, but honestly, this does not detract from the cottage or the experience at all. In fact, the location is really convenient, with the main bus route right outside and one of the local pubs just a stone’s throw away — although be sure to book early! The private courtyard garden is beautiful and captures the sun perfectly, while the cosy and comfortable living area is perfect for those nights when you just want to curl up and unwind. We especially appreciated the thoughtful touches on arrival. Having tea and coffee waiting for us after what felt like an endless drive was very much welcomed — especially before we had even had a chance to find the nearest supermarket! Dormouse Cottage has so much charm, comfort and character. It really feels like a home away from home, and we would happily return. A wonderful cottage in a lovely village — Dormouse is simply perfect!

“We’ve been to Dormouse Cottage a couple of times before and absolutely loved it - in fact we’ve booked again for October this year and can’t wait to go again!”

Brilliant position in village - just over the road from the beach and coastal walks, and 80 steps each way to either of the fabulous pubs in the village which both do brilliant food, and are dog friendly. The cottage is gorgeous- very comfortable and clean, lovely comfy bed etc - looking forward to our next stay!

“I don’t believe in being negative ,hence the positive feedback.”

However I would like to comment on a couple of slight niggles lol. Firstly it’s not evident from the photos etc but the property is literally right next to a busy road and although through the thickness of the walls the cottage is extremely well insulted from the road noise , it was a surprise. Secondly the parking was slightly annoying as at least twice during the stay , I had to search for a suitable parking spot due to there being no areas available close to the cottage. These are only minor issues though and the owner was extremely accommodating and even allowed us to arrive earlier which gave us effectively an extra day holiday (as well as checking that everything was ok during the stay ). Therefore overall it’s a beautiful place to stay and definitely worth a visit

“We have just returned from a wonderful stay at Dormouse cottage.”

Again it provided a ideal base for a short break holiday with all requirements you need. I cannot fault the cottage as it has everything you need for comfort It is situated in a lovely village with 2 pubs and a local post office/shop. The cottage has a good shower and comfortable beds. The kitchen is well maintained and the garden is lovely for relaxing in the sun. The local Hive beach is easy to walk to, and other areas are just a car drive away. Thank you again for a fantastic stay at Dormouse Cottage.

“Spent a lovely relaxing week at Dormouse cottage situated in the beautiful village of Burton Bradstock.”

It was well equipped, dog friendly and comfortable. The local walks were picturesque and the stroll to Hive Beach and cafe was great. The two local pubs/restaurants were welcoming and cosy. The location was perfect for visiting other places along the Dorset coast including West Bay, Lyme Regis and Weymouth.

“Very happy to say we really enjoyed our stay at Dormouse cottage.”

It was extremely comfortable. We had a query and this was dealt with efficiently and quickly. The bed was very comfortable, the patio garden was a lovely sun trap. The kitchen is bijou but had everything we needed. The stairs to the bedrooms are steep but not an issue for us. The parking was potentially unpredictable especially later in the summer but did not cause us any issues. A Hive Beach cafe van had been dumped irresponsibly on the corner opposite the cottage, it looked like it had been there some time and remained there when we departed, but completely appreciate this is nothing to do with the owner. The village is lovely, quaint, friendly and of course has lovely walks. It has two great food pubs We would recommend this cottage for a couple or small family.

“Our first trip to Burton Bradstock to explore part of the SW Coastal Path was amazing.”

We picked this spot because it’s perfectly situated between Lyme Regis and Weymouth, with the X53 bus service as our main transport option. Doormouse Cottage, tucked in the heart of the village, made an ideal base—close to bus stops, two convenience stores, and the fantastic Three Horseshoes Pub. After a long day of walking, it was the perfect place—comfortable and cozy with a fantastic shower and fluffy white towels. The kitchen was compact but well-equipped, and the bed was lovely with soft white linens and plush, comfy pillows. The Cottage is charmingly quirky, embracing its unique 16th-century character and history. We recommend stopping by the Three Horseshoes for a pint, but if you're planning to dine there (the menu is fantastic), make sure to book well in advance as it's a lively and busy pub. The Hive Beach Café at the nearby beach is also highly recommended, though it's best to reserve ahead to avoid disappointment. All in all, Doormouse Cottage is the ideal spot for a couple to stay while exploring this section of the SW Coastal Path. It’s just a pity we didn’t have a dog with us—it would have been perfect.

“Super little cottage full of character in a lovely village 10/15 min walk from the beach.”

Clean, with all the facilities you need, and great communication for directions and keys. Double bed very comfortable and no traffic noise at night. Ample street parking on the village green. Single bed would benefit from a new matress. Would definitely recommend.

“Depending on what is important to you in a stay will determine how suitable this cottage is for you.”

The cottage was clean but had dust on ledges etc. The kitchen equipment needs replacing - scissors don't cut, bottle opener strips rather removes corks and the saucepan lids don't fit the saucepans. The bed dips in the middle and could do with a new mattress. The sofa is very uncomfortable. The single sun lounger is sprung with one spring missing and I didn't dare lie on it. It has definitely seen better days. That said, the shower was hot and powerful, the cottage nicely appointed with pictures etc and it is a beautiful village to stay in and close to the beach. Lots of character, which is what we wanted. I think with a bit of investment the stay could be much more comfortable and I'd then rate much higher. We had a wonderful time but, as I said, it depends what's important to you.

We'll be there in a few days and will check the kitchen equipment and probably replace the sunlounger (now done along with new scissors, corkscrew and a new pan)-there is nowhere to store it so the weather has probably got to it.We haven't had any complaints about the mattress in the past . “The kitchen tap dripped continually.”

Not disturbing but annoying. Phoned the owner and it would be sorted. The maintenance guy wanted to come at a particular time which was not convenient - we don't want to sit around on holiday waiting! Can't they get a key from the owner and come when we are not around? And, please, on the listing, state that the cottage is on a busy main road where the traffic starts at 4am and doesn't stop until after 10pm.

Hi. The tap is fixed now. You yourself suggested that the Dreams Cottages maintenance man could come at any time and that you could leave the key in the key safe so he could let himself in, so there would certainly have been no need for you to wait for him.As I recall, I actually phoned you when you arrived to check that everything was fine and you said the tap was dripping but that it didn't bother you. We haven't found that there is traffic noise at night-times, and other visitor's feedback hasn't mentioned this.The cottage's location is clear from the information on the website. “Dormouse Cottage is a quaint and cosy cottage in a picturesque village.”

The garden is dog proof which was a benefit for us and our dog. The two village pubs are both within a five minute walk - handy for food. The weather was glorious for the whole week we were at the cottage.

“We had a wonderful holiday here.”

The house was perfect for me, my husband and the dog. The location was great, the village was stunning. The pub is a very short stroll and served us the best food we have ever had from a pub. The beach is very close and also has an excellent restaurant. This was a great base to explore the Jurassic coast. The cottage was quaint and pretty but a good size, full of character, with a large garden which also catches the sun. It was clean and we had great communication from the owners. We had no problems parking around the village green. We would 100% return here if we decide to holiday in the same area in future

“This is a wonderful cottage in an ideal area with all the necessary needs for a short holiday break.”

The cottage has been improved and has all the needs for 2 people to stay. It has 2 excellent pubs within walking distance and nearby Hive Beach with a great seafood cafe. West Bay ,Charmouth and Lyme Regis are all within travelling distance. We had no problems with our stay and would like to thank the owners for a lovely cottage .Keep up the standard.

“We loved our time at dormouse cottage, old cottages have a lot more character than modern houses and that's what we enjoy, a cottage with all it's nooks and crannies.”

We did find the sink in the bathroom a little problematic and the water didn't drain properly. We even tried using the plunger provided but my husband just got wet and didn't make any difference. But only one small thing and we will hope to visit again in the future.

“This was our third stay at this property, the first time we provided quite a lot of feedback to the owner on improvements that could be made, this included feedback on the cleanliness of the property.”

They said they had taken this on board, so we agreed to try the property again a second time. Quite a bit of the feedback had been addressed but we still had issues with the cleanliness, in particular the sofa, which was covered in dog hairs. We gave feedback a second time and was assured that this would be rectified and we were offered a discount for booking again. We like to give people the benefit of doubt and booked for a third visit. We stayed from 14th to 21st April 2025 and were SO disappointed to experience the worst cleanliness we had seen to date. The sofa still had the same throw over it, which is clearly one of the causes of so many hairs on the sofa, the entire sofa itself was covered in dog hairs, the floors weren’t very clean and neither were the surfaces. There was also a terrible drainage issue in the bathroom, the sink took ages for any water to drain away and the toilet kept giving off a drain smell that wasn’t pleasant. I’m not sure who is responsible for the cleaning, but I can guarantee all they do is change the bedding and clean the toilet, sink and visible parts of the shower tray (there was still dirt and hairs in between the door and edge of the tray) nothing else! Unfortunately there is nowhere I can see to add any of the photos I took, but I will pass these on to the relevant people should they want them. The internet also seemed to have issues as the tv kept cutting out while we were watching Netflix or other web based channels. Another thing to mention was the amount of attempted phone calls from the owner while we were there, 8 in total. I understand he probably just wanted to check how things were, but as we were on holiday and trying to enjoy ourselves I didn’t fancy a phone call explaining the issues we had found. We already lost hours of our holiday cleaning and didn’t want to miss any more with phone calls that could have waited until we got home. It’s very disappointing as we make regular visits to this village and love the cottage feel, it could be such a lovely little cottage, but with cleanliness issues again on a third visit, and this time worse than before, I would not ever stay here again.

We are extremely upset by this review as we made every effort to address your concerns from your previous visit, and tried to contact you several times to check everything was to your satisfaction while you were there. If anything was unsatisfactory we could have attended to it right at the beginning of your stay. If necessary we would have come to the cottage and attended to any issues ourselves.We have also generally had very good reviews, with very few concerns about cleanliness. I have spoken again to the cleaning team. We have stayed often at the cottage ourselves and found the internet fine. We also haven't experienced the problems you mention with the bathroom and neither have other guests to my knowledge. The throw on the sofa was washed a few days before your visit.The cleaner takes photos of the cottage after a clean. I have seen a picture of the sofa and can categorically state that it was not covered in dog hair before you arrived.The floors and surfaces are usually thoroughly cleaned in between guests. We accept that you don't wish to visit again though we are disappointed. Property Owner

“We have just returned from what has been a lovely few days in Burton Bradstock, made even better by the beautiful weather.”

Dormouse Cottage is a quaint property in a perfect location with easy access to the beach and two pubs. The property did not disappoint the bed was comfortable and it had everything we needed for our short stay. Just a few things to mention, beware of the low ceilings which is typical in a property of this age and the noise from the busy road especially when sitting in the garden. On cleanliness we were a bit disappointed to find that the oven had not been cleaned, ( the shelves still had baked on food on them) and the sofa and cushions had dog hairs all over them. This did not spoil our time at Dormouse cottage as everything else was perfect and we will definitely return again.

“We have just returned from our second stay in this peaceful and charming cottage and have already booked to return later in the year.”

The cottage is very well maintained and comfortable. It is located in the beautiful village of Burton Bradstock with two welcoming pubs and within walking distance of the Hive beach restaurant. When we stay, we leave the car in the village and walk to Westbay or Abbotsbury. We look forward to our next holiday.

“A comfortable little nook, cosy , very close to the beautiful coastline .”

Village amenities all that you need . Do try The Anchor pub .. Excellent meals in friendly atmosphere . A couple of gripes , the main one being the lack of recycling in the village ... Very poor in this day and age ... Little points , only one tea towel , only one loo roll .. None of these the owner's fault.. Would return if down in the area again and would definitely recommend this cottage to any aged couple ..

“After reading some previous reviews we were a little anxious (general cleanliness, road noise, stairs ) So on arrival we were very pleased with the way dormouse cottage was presented,I'd best describe it as cosy and a little quirky but in a good way we know Burton bradstock from a previous stay in the village so parking wasn't going to be an issue unfortunately one of the neighbours was non to accommodating when we were trying to un load not helped by a little white van parked directly opposite the front door (looked like it had been there quite a while too) that aside and not really a problem, dormouse cottage is delightful perhaps let down by a very uncomfortable sofa every thing else including traffic altogether noticeable was not offensive Would I recommend it yes.”

“Great little house with bags of character.”

We had concerns after reading reviews regarding the stairs and noise. The stairs are steep but perfectly manageable.The road noise in August at the busiest times of day was noticeable but didn’t affect us over night as the traffic dropped off dramatically. Burton Bradstock is a lovely little village.We ate out at the Anchor Inn and the Hive beach cafe both within easy walking distance and had fabulous meals. The PO shop with local produce great for essentials. We visited Bridport, Lyme Regis and Charmouth and did some fantastic coastal walks including Golden Cap with incredible views. Wish we had been able to stay longer, 4 days not enough!

“We had a lovely stay and the cottage was clean , the bathroom was modern however the very steep stairs and high step into the shower were an obstacle and would challenge anyone with mobility issues, anyone over 5ft 8 would be hitting their head and the garden whilst enclosed and private was unloved and void of comfort .”

The description failed to explain that busy roads run along 2 sides of the cottage and a double decker bus uses one of those roads making outdoor eating a no go . This cottage would not be suitable for a small child or a small dog our daschund struggled with the stairs and we had to block his use which isn’t ideal . We had a pleasant stay but would have looked for something a little bigger if we had realised just how small this cottage is .

The description of the cottage makes it very clear that the stairs are steep. We wouldn't expect a dog to be using the stairs or coming up to the bedrooms. The shower is a standard design which should not cause a problem. In general, a very old cottage would not be perfect for anyone with mobility issues and again the ad clearly states that it is not suitable for small children. “We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.”

Dormouse Cottage is compact, delightful and full of charm, yet has modern facilities. We used it as a centre to visit the locality and it was perfect for this purpose. The highlights of our holiday were a visit to the gardens of Forde Abbey near Chard and the Etches Collection in Kimmeridge - both a bit of a drive away but well worth it. Another highlight was eating breakfast at the cafe by Hive beach, overlooking the sea - just wonderful - the breakfast and the views! If you are a member of the National Trust and want to park a car free of charge at Hive Beach (and other NT car parks) remember to bring your membership card.

“Dormouse is a charming little period cottage, comfortable, well appointed and well equipped.”

It is a comfortable stay for two, possible but tight if using the second bedroom. the stairs and steps are what you would expect in a property of this period, steep, to be treated with care but not a problem with the good wooden rail. The kitchen is tiny, well equipped but limited working surfaces for any serious cooking. We enjoyed our stay very much, lovely village and pubs and lots of good dog walks around.

“We have had a lovely week in Dormouse Cottage.”

The cottage is warm and cosy and the bed is very comfortable. The kitchen is compact, but had everything we needed and the bathroom now has a new shower, which was nice. I loved sitting on the window seat, watching the world go by. We have stayed in Burton Bradstock a few times,.it is one of our favourite places. There are 2 good pubs in the village and 2 shops. Our favourite place is Hive Beach, we ate at the Hive Beach Cafe a few times and it never disappoints.

“This was such a lovely place to stay.”

It has been thoughtfully resourced and decorated. Also very clean. There is a window seat that you can watch the world go by or read a book there if you prefer. There are a lot of good walks nearby and places to visit as well as the Jurassic coast bus if you feel like giving the car a break. We enjoyed having lunch in a moment of sunshine in the back garden and there are pubs nearby as well as a post office/ village shop as well as a shop in the garage if needed. We would gladly return.

“We stayed at Dormouse cottage during the Feb half term.”

Here are our comments: Good points: Able to get into the property easily, and actually got an email the day before saying it had already been cleaned so we could arrive whatever time we wanted. Beds all very clean and comfy, we all slept brilliantly Cute, traditional cottage, with many features you would expect (this properly has steep stairs and low beams as you would expect a cottage to have) Bathroom clean with a brand new seal on shower screen, so no leaks when using the shower Fully enclosed rear garden to let our dog out into, this was great Good TV that worked well, and really good wifi even with multiple devices connected Microwave, fridge, cooker and other kitchen appliances all clean and worked fine. Warm and easy to heat to the temperature you want Arrived to a bottle of wine, tea and coffee making things and pre packeted biscuits waiting for us, this was a lovely touch! Not so good points: Other than the basics you would expect some areas of the cottage needed a good clean. I think this isn’t helped by all the decorative items around the cottage. I went prepared and wiped round with detox wipes. The sofa wasn’t great and was covered in dog hair. We spent about 20 minutes hoovering this. It did have a lot of scatter cushions and blankets on it so we removed these and didn’t put them back on then gave it a good hoover. The front door was quite stiff and needed a good pull / push to make sure it was shut properly. Others have commented on the noise from the windows, we didn’t really notice this too much and it definitely wasn’t an issue for us. Overall we had a great stay. It was comfy, we slept well and could easily sort food etc. The location is also great with plenty of things to do in and around the village. Plus our 7 year old son also really enjoyed it and slept well. Since returning the owner of the cottage contacted us for feedback and was genuinely interested in what we had to say and how he can make improvements. Again, Another great touch! Thanks for a lovely stay, we are booking for a return visit later in the year!

“Having used Sykes holiday accommodation in Wales we were disappointed with Dormouse Cottage.”

Many of the widows required replacing and would not close properly leaving a draughty gap, and the cottage required a new front door, with the sill being rotten. Small things like stained mugs and a toaster which only seemed to toast one side. The heating was good and efficient.

“We left after 5 days.”

Stairs a nightmare, treads very narrow and steep, had to turn sideways on whilst holding onto the rail to get up or down. I am in so much pain. I tried to cancel weeks before but Sykes didn't want to know they wouldn't even give me the contact number for the owners. Road noise terrible, noisy motorbikes/traffic all weekend passing within inches of garden. Not a peaceful holiday it was awful.

“Overall a lovely little cottage but does require a few maintenance issues such as the windows and in bathroom.”

The glass screen on bath allows water to go on floor and door stop needs replacing. Also need to consider installing a handrail in the garden as steps up to patio area are steep. Only thing that would really stop us staying here again is the close proximity to the main road and the noise this generates.

We have booked a time for the windows to be renovated and a decorator to attend to the crack in the bedroom wall.The windows don't have woodlice-they are just in need of refurbishment. We have also planned other work. We can't do things as quickly as we would like because the cottage had bookings a few months ahead when we bought it. I think the bathroom needs the window open regularly as at present there is no extractor. We're pleased you like the village-we love it. Property Owner

“Very disappointing and dirty cottage.”

It needs a huge amount of work done to it - painting, new windows etc… Generally in need of a thorough deep clean. There were cobwebs everywhere, the house smelled awful when we arrived but realised this is because of the hoover - which stank to high heaven when you used it. The carpet is filthy and stained. Windows looked like they hadn’t been cleaned for over 6 months. Some windows are rotten. The towels were stained with yellow marks. Behind the bed was disgusting! It’s not at all like the photos on Sykes or Dream Cottages website- the sofa is grey and grubby - not cream, the table is too big for the cottage and not white. It is very poorly stocked - the only saving grace was that we ate out every night. There were no cleaning products apart from washing up liquid and multi surface cleaner - so had to use that to clean the bathroom and mop the floor before we left. Don’t know why we were provided with dishwasher tablets as there’s no dishwasher and I certainly wouldn’t wash my clothes with dishwasher tablets. Also situated on a very busy, noisy road - don’t think that you will enjoy a peaceful breakfast outside as trucks and cats rush past! A very overpriced and underwhelming cottage. We contacted Sykes about a few things and they did offer to get a cleaner in on the Thursday - we said it wasn’t worth it but hoped that the cottage would be cleaned properly for the next guests. They also provided us with a clothes airer (as we’d had to drape washing over shower screens, radiators etc…) and a new cafetière on the Thursday. I do feel they need to update their photos and description of the property as it is definitely NOT the way it appears on their site. However, Burton Bradstock is a beautiful village with fabulous walks and places to eat - just don’t stay in this cottage!

“We loved staying in Burton Bradstock and the cottage was as described and worked well for us as a base to explore Dorset.”

We were concerned about feedback from previous users but this was rectified before we visited. We originally place out order with VRBO that in the end was a waste of time and an unnecessary step in the booking process. I suggest the owner de-lists from this organisation. A week before we went to Dormouse cottage VRBO told us our booking was cancelled and this proved to be completely untrue. We also had communication from Dream Cottages that also proved to be a confusion and took a few phone calls to clarify the situation. Otherwise we enjoyed our stay at Dormouse Cottage.
