(See A further walk or short drive away are two more good pubs serving food; The Thimble Inn and The Brace of Pheasants. Most of the local pubs have seating inside and out and are pet friendly. Around three miles away, is the pretty village of Cerne Abbas, overseen by the famous Cerne Giant - there are many legends surrounding the giant, one of which suggests he has mysterious fertility powers. Around eight miles away is the county town of Dorchester which has a great combination of shopping, historical and visitor attractions. Around a 30 minute drive away to the west is the coast at Weymouth which boasts a long and sandy beach along with traditional beach entertainments, alternatively head easterly to the beautiful Lulworth Cove. Good location to explore Jurassic coast and the countryside of Dorset and Somerset. Quite spacious and nicely furnished. Close to good eateries in tbe Piddle valley especially The Thimble Inn that is excellent for Sunday lunch. Close to Dorchester and Dippy dinasor exhibition. Owners friendly and welcoming. Stayed April 2018

Miss M Thomas
A beautiful home from home, in a quiet fairly remote village. Owners are very helpful. Lots of idyllic countryside and spectacular walks

Mr L Bennett
Beautiful cottage in a fantastic setting. Ideally placed for trips to Lulworth Cove, Corfe Castle, Swanage..20-30 minutes from everywhere. Very friendly owners. Highly recommend.

About the Location

Dorchester offers rolling green countryside, alongside all the pleasures of a vibrant market town, with beautiful architecture, an abundance of Roman history and some of the finest restaurants in Dorset. Shopping in Dorchester is a much loved pastime too, with many high street names alongside lovely boutique stores and regular traditional markets.

You can feel the spirit of Thomas Hardy everywhere in Dorchester; this is where he was born in 1840 in the delightful cob and thatch cottage built by his grandfather just a 12 minute drive from the town. This cottage is where Thomas Hardy sat and wrote ‘Under the Greenwood Tree’ and ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’. Visitors can visit Hardy’s Cottage, which is now owned by The National Trust and has barely been altered since his family left.
