The property

Situated on the rugged and beautiful isle of Portland, Bowman's is a character, terraced Dorset holiday cottage located on the wide avenue which is Wakeham.

Internally, the owners have sympathetically updated the decor in a contemporary style, whilst maintaining the original and eye-catching features of the cottage, including exposed Portland stone walls, quarry tiled flooring and fireplaces (not in use) in the sitting room.

The galley style kitchen provides the ideal place to rustle up an evening meal complete with separate dining room.

Cottage style stairs lead you up to the two bedrooms and bathroom.

The sea around Weymouth and Portland hosted the 2012 Olympic sailing events - they attract many visitors and are perfect for water sports, including sailing, wind surfing and kite surfing.

Other visitors love the bird watching, fishing, walking and climbing that is on the doorstep in Portland; walks can encompass the iconic 'Portland Bill' lighthouse and quarries.

Just a few minutes walk from the cottage, there is a beautiful area called 'Church Ope Cove'.

Here you will find the pretty Portland museum and a walkway which leads to the secluded Cove.

The walk way passes under an impressive stone arch and a little further along is Rufus Castle (a ruin) with panoramic views along the Jurassic Coast.

A few minutes down steep steps (150) takes you to Church Ope Cove.

Neighbouring Easton has good amenities, including two supermarkets, cafes and independent local shops.

A relatively short drive or bus journey away is the main resort of Weymouth, which has a long, beautiful, sandy beach, traditional entertainments and good shopping.

This Portland Stone cottage provides an ideal base for exploring the Jurassic coast at any time of the year.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £200.

About the location

WAKEHAM, PORTLAND

Portland 2.3 miles; Weymouth 6.8 miles; Dorchester 14.4 miles.

Wakeham is a small hamlet situated in a conservation area on the eastern side of the rugged ‘Isle’ of Portland above the beach at Church Ope Cove. The wide road running through the centre was constructed to accommodate the transport of Portland Stone by horse drawn carts from the numerous local quarries. You can learn all about the stone quarrying at a fascinating exhibition within the local Portland Museum, and then explore the nearby coastal path, a steep walk down to the cove, passing the ruins of the Grade I listed Rufus Castle and St Andrew’s Church along the way. Sheltered Church Ope Cove offers a popular base for diving as there are numerous wrecks to discover off the shore, whilst there are also plenty of opportunities locally for fishing, climbing, sailing and bird watching. Alternatively take the drive down to the very tip at Portland Bill, which juts out into the channel and watch the boats brave their way through the rough waves. Whilst the nearby family friendly, seaside resort of Weymouth offers visitors plenty of family friendly attractions. A most attractive and unique holiday destination at any time of the year.

Notes: Bathroom, slightly smaller than average bath with shower over, hand basin and toilet. Please note there is restricted headroom (6'4'' minimum).
