The \u2018wishing well\u2019 is sourced by a spring thought to be the most powerful in the South of England.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-38160\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dream-cottages.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2014\/07\/DSC_0150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"298\" height=\"198\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is what makes the water gardens so lush. The water is thought to have\u00a0 possessing therapeutic properties (the scenery around the area is defiantly very therapeutic in my opinion!)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSC_0112.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1906\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSC_0112-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0112\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For centuries, the well has enjoyed royal patronage.\u00a0 The former Prince of Wales (briefly King Edward VIII) visited in August 1923, having previously had the water sent to him, presumably by train which to this day still stops at the nearby Upwey Halt.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSC_0147.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1911\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSC_0147-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0147\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>King George III also visited on a number of occasions around 1770. \u00a0Indeed the seat adjacent to the Wishing Well was added for his comfort and on the third visit he had his feet washed at the foot of the steps where once there was a stone basin for this purpose.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-38183\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dream-cottages.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2014\/07\/DSC_0166.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It is also believed that the gold cup from which he drank the waters later became the original Ascot Gold Cup given to the winner of this prestigious flat race held annually in June.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSC_0157.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1914\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSC_0157-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0157\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Exactly when the springs at Upwey became known as the \u2018Wishing Well\u2019 is unclear but it is mentioned as such as far back as 1874 in the novel \u2018Broken Bonds\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSC_0132.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1910\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSC_0132-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0132\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>People have been \u2018taking the waters\u2019 at Upwey Wishing Well for centuries.\u00a0 In fact it was so popular that in times gone by two elderly ladies from the village assisted visitors in taking the waters in the \u2018correct\u2019 way which involves holding a glass (or indeed a laurel leaf) in your right, standing with your back to the well and sipping the water whilst making a wish.\u00a0 Then throw the remaining water over your left shoulder back into the well.\u00a0 Unfortunately modern environmental health advice discourages people from drinking the water.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-38193\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dream-cottages.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2014\/07\/DSC_0119.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After making a wish or two I recommend stopping in at The Tearooms. On offer is a wide range of delicious home-cooked tasty food.
