Weymouth’s BIG Christmas
Weymouth will be going all out with festive cheer this year. A fun-filled festive month of events leading up to the big day offers a real treat for Christmas lovers! Here’s our highlights:
4th December – Kicking off in style with a fabulous opening ceremony, entertainment will include music and dancing, as well as a skating display on the ice rink, which will also be open to the public from 3.15pm on the day. There will also be a Christmas market to browse for some great gifts, while enjoying some festive food, but don’t miss Santa’s Parade at 5pm with a live marching band and real reindeer! Watch the big lights switch on at 6pm, which will be followed by more entertainment on the main stage.
5th & 6th December – Pop up Panto weekend is a great chance to catch exerts from the pantomime classic Snow White, along with a Punch & Judy Christmas Special.
12th & 13th December – The BIG Christmas Show weekend will include an interactive nativity play, as well as a Christmas sing-a-long, enough to get anyone in the spirit!
19th & 20th December – Out Loud Christmas offers another chance to hear some great music from local bands and artists.
Between 21st and 24th December, the Christmas market will be open, so you’ll be able to grab all those last minute gifts!
For all the boys and girls on the good list, face painting will be available at the above events, as well as the chance to visit Santa in his grotto before the big day!
5th December – Poundbury Festive Farmers Market
Held on the first Saturday of every month, the Poundbury Farmers Market is a great place to pick up quality local produce. Whether you are looking to deck your own Christmas table, or for deliciously quirky gifts for friends and family, the impressive architecture and stunning views over Maiden Castle, make this a unique market experience.
5th – 6th Dec – Vintage Christmas at the Tank Museum
Shop till you drop and grab some unique Christmas gifts, while learning how a typical Christmas would have been between the 1920s, right up until the post war era. With living history reenactors to help take you back in time, this is a great way to truly experience the ghosts of Christmas past!
Also on offer will be a Christmas carvery lunch, Santa’s grotto and children’s crafts and activities. There will also be a best dressed competition, for those who wish to attend in period dress.
8th December – Bridport Christmas Tree Service
What better way to get in the spirit than with a whole exhibition of twinkling, festive trees? There will be over 60 decorated and illuminated trees, each donated by a different charity, community group, public authority, school or young people’s group.
9th Dec (from 4pm) – Bridport’s Christmas Cheer
A fantastically festive evening of roasted chestnuts, mulled wine & cider, a farmer’s market, craft stalls, fair rides and even Santa’s Grotto, offering a free gift for every child who visits!
Many of the local shops also stay open for the evening, offering late night shopping and a perfect opportunity for some Christmas shopping.
Weekends in December – Meet Father Christmas at Farmer Palmers:
Head to Farmer Palmers during December to see the farm park transformed in to a winter wonderland, complete with elves and the chance to meet Father Christmas! There will be no pre-booking required at weekends, but visitors are advised to call beforehand for weekday visits.
27th Nov – 23rd Dec – Christmas at Kingston Lacey
A trip to Kingston Lacy is a fascinating day out for art and history lovers; from beautiful paintings, to detailed carvings, family souvenirs and the largest selection of Egyptian artefacts in the UK, all presented in a lavish family home, which was originally built to resemble an Italian Palace.
Throughout December, visitors will also be treated to seeing the beautiful house decked in traditional Christmas decorations and asked to get involved with the festivities with a nip of cherry and samples of some traditional fare. Heading outside after dusk, why not follow the illuminated trail to find Santa’s sleigh in the grounds.
Sunday 20th Dec – Weymouth ‘Santa Dash’
A fantastic Weymouth event, the ‘Chase the Pudding’ race is a fond local favourite, and quite a spectacle to behold!
Competitors comically dressed as Santa’s, fairies, elves and various other Christmas characters chase a Christmas pudding along the beach. Spectators can sit back and enjoy the show with mulled wine, mince pies and a selection of festive stalls to browse.
New Years in Weymouth:
Weymouth remains one of the Top 10 destinations to celebrate New Years’ Eve with recommendations from both The Sunday Times and The Guardian.
With the streets, bars and pubs of Weymouth brimming with live music, food stalls and party goers donning fancy dress in celebration, the festive atmosphere is hard to beat! The famous 12 o‘clock chimes are announced by the town’s Jubilee Clock and a fireworks display over the bay – it is a fantastic and memorable way to see in the New Year!
